Tips for Choosing an Instructor

•  What types of personalities are comfortable for you?”  In order to succeed in a class do you need a
teacher who will listen to your questions, spend extra hours with you for help, an entertaining teacher,
or someone who will be more authoritative and/or direct in his or her teaching style?

•  Get recommendations from friends, classmates, other teachers, or go the department and talk with the
secretary or department chairperson.  Tell them what kind of a teacher you need in order to succeed.

•  Ask the teacher you are considering taking if you can sit in on a class. This “visit” will give you a sample of his or her teaching style.

•  Ask the department for a sample syllabus for that instructor.

•  Actually email or call the instructor and ask them about the content and assignments in their class.

•  Visit the departmental websites.  Usually you will find information regarding instructors.

•  Surf the Internet by visiting websites where students have written comments about the teachers.
But be careful!  Do not assume that everything that is written about an instructor is true.
Some students do not have the same personality needs as you or may have had a bad experience
with that instructor.  You cannot assume all students feel the same way about an instructor.
